The Six Thinking Hats is a system suggested by Edward de Bono, a Maltese psychologist originated the term lateral thinking. The Six Thinking Hats provides an effective solution for group discussion and individual thinking, and is considered as the root of Critical Thinking.

Meaning of the Color of the “Six Hats”?

Here are the meaning of the six hats:

  • Blue (Process): What is the subject or context? What are you thinking about? What is the goal? The Blue hat helps you identify the big picture of the studying problem.
  • White (Facts): What information is available? What are the facts? The white hat helps you focuses on the available data and facts in learning lessons from them.
  • Red (Feelings): Refers to any intuitive or instinctive gut reactions or statements of emotional feeling. The Red hat helps you identify think problems by using your intuition.
  • Black (Cautious): Logic applied to identifying reasons to be cautious and conservative. The black hat helps you identify possible negative results, threats and risk for your plans, allowing you to resolve or mitigate them effectively.
  • Yellow (Benefits): Identification of benefits. This hat focuses on the positive sides of situations.
  • Green (Creativity): Reactions or statements resulted from creative thinking. Any new technologies, services and skills can be applied?
